There is a talk next week that I encourage you to attend. Feel free to blog about it if you like.
LEWISBURG, Pa. — Gitanjali Gutierrez, a 1992 graduate of Bucknell University who is serving as counsel for detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, will give the talk, “Torture, Guantanamo and American Values,” on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Forum of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell.
Ms. Gutierrez, based on her work, will be arguing that torture is not an American value nor valuable to America. I hope to be there.
Bucknell has other connections to Guantamo and US policies towards suspected terrorists. The chair of teh Board of Trustees, Judge Crawford, has been the “convening authority for military tribunals” whcih was created by an act of Congress. One commentator called her acknowledgement of torture in at least one detainee’s, Al Qhatani’s, case a “turning point.”
The speaker is Al Qhatani’s counsel. I wonder if Judge Crawford will be here?
